Thanks to the currently melting snow, everyone is getting stuck. I drive an Escort wagon, and have had to pull people out of ditches before, but today was the biggest I've done yet: a 2012 Chevy C1500. I had to pull him up a 2' rise, then he started to slide sideways, so I moved my car and pulled him sideways to keep the passenger side of the bed from getting ripped off. Dragged him sideways about a foot before finishing pulling him out.
My car was on a sheet of ice the whole time, so I didn't have the benefit of dry pavement or anything — it's just that I had the advantage of not having my front tires in a hole like he did, and being able to get a run at it.
What's the craziest thing you've done with your car?

I'm confused, is the question what the biggest thing I've towed? the craziest thing I've done with my car? or whats the biggest car I've rescued?

I pushed a dumpster about 6 feet with my Crown Vic. Garbage truck didn't put it back in the right spot so we couldn't get the gate closed. Not sure how much they weigh empty, but I made quick work of it with my bumper

lol I guess I just assumed that the biggest thing you've towed would be the craziest thing — after all, hooning is what cars are made for; it's not crazy. Towing a truck with a little car... that's crazy. But if you've done something crazier than towing a vehicle 3 times your cars' size, please do share!

Towed a '92 Mercury Sable through a November blizzard with a 4 speed '70 Ranchero. No pictures of that missadventure sadly. Couldnt use the Silverado because it was under a recall for spontaneous combustion.

Once towed a four-horse trailer with a full-sized Blazer.
Some poo came out.

Old>New any day of the week. Seeing an old car pulling a new one is like seeing the visiting team win.

We had to un-stuck a combine with two beat to shit wheezy old farm trucks. Counted down, everyone gassed, hoped nothing flew apart and killed us all. Nothing did and grandpa was none the wiser.

Of the Blazer? Poor thing.

I have pulled out a Dodge dually with a Tracker, I think the dually did most of the work.

Tandem towing or parallel? Either way, that's awesome.

Pulled a Duramax a few feet through the mud, only to realize it wasn't coming out, I was dragging it's frame. I didn't have quite enough grip to do the rest of the job, neither did either of my friends Cummins. It took an F350 on 38's to get it out. But pulling 8k lbs+ plus truck without much traction in a vehicle with like a 2.5k tow rating is relatively impressive. Before that, I did pull an F-150 out of a river.

To answer one of your two questions, biggest thing I've towed... There's a toolbox bolted down in front of the slicks.

Nice! How long did you have the Tracker? I've often contemplated getting one of those.

The Merc had just had a transaxle rebuild, and keep in mind the 'Chero is rwd, no abs, manual, with steamroller all seasons on it. And at the time it looked like Josephs Coat of many colours because the bodywork wasn't finished. And we were flat towing the Sable.

Parallel. I was 13 or so and had one of the trucks out mending fences when my cousin came up and was like "Um, we need the truck". I turn around to start unloading the supplies out of the bed and he goes "Nah, we'll need you to drive too". So we tool over there and the combine is high centered or something in a bog, don't really remember...long time ago. Ghetto rigged some chains and tow ropes in a Y. Everyone gassed, got it a foot or two clear and we were good to go. Was a good thing too because my grandpa didn't take kindly to extra expense nor to coming off schedule. Having to pull another tractor off its duty to extract it may very well have gotten my uncle (who grounded it) murdered.

What were you driving? Or was this by hand? ...in which case, color me very impressed.

It was kind of a family Tracker, my dad insured it but my cousins or uncles were free to come take it if they were going hunting or up to the cabin. I was only able to drive it with someone else who had a full license (British Columbia law) for a couple months before it snapped a rod and wrecked the motor. I was out with one of my cousins on our way to the cabin when someone with a snowmobile deck on his truck slid off the road and got us to tug him out. They had a snowmobile trying to tug it out when we found them.

Heaviest that I've towed. I think it weighed some 7000lbs or so.

Drove one if these while flat-towing another off road-ish.

haha I've tried that, but it's not very effective. I guess a 4ton truck is more than a 300lb snowmobile can tow, go figure.

I pulled a fully laden skip wagon off a soft verge backwards with just 70hp and a 2 tonne tow rope. Took a few wheel spins, but she made it.
Also, just last week I had to tow one of these:

Not the largest but I thought I'd share.
A friend of mine towed this
...with me inside.
I was voluntold (being the smallest) to hold onto a small single-seater electric racecar we built in college while we darted for the racetrack. We were in such a hurry to not be late for tech inspection that I didn't even hesitate and hopped in the back while my friends locked it from the outside and made a run for the track.

I drove this combo about 600 km from Toronto to MIS for FSAE 2010. I don't know what the final weight of it was, but it was definitely noticeable, especially afterwards when my parents had to put on a new set of brake pads haha.
Best moment was coming back across customs at Detroit when the agent asked what was in the trailer. "Race car", I said. "Oh yeah? Pop it open."
I popped the lock and he goes, "Yep, that's a race car."

Nice! I've used my wife's Escape to do some towing (3,500lb camper with a weight distributing hitch), and it handled it quite well. What sort of car do you race?

Towed a 1/2-ton Suburban with a 3/4-ton Suburban. Trailer lost a wheel which hit an Infiniti. Not a fantastic day, that.

a 3500lb pop-up trailer with this:
![]() 01/05/2015 at 20:00 |

That was my university's 2010 Formula SAE racer.
I should add that my family also uses the Tribute to tow our boat, a 17ft fiberglass bowrider. Fully loaded it probably weighs in close to the 3500 lbs max of the V6. It's manageable for the 100 km trip we do from the marina, but any longer or heaver and we'd have to get a larger vehicle (and this one is bad enough on gas when towing)

Those popup trailers have gotten ludicrously heavy.

Pulled a homemade 16-20 foot lowboy trailer with my dad's '92 Silverado 1500. The lowboy had a truck axle at the back along with a movable front axle that had wheels 2 feet apart and a 6 foot drawbar. Not a fifth wheel or gooseneck. It was a nightmare to back up (worse than anhydrous ammonia tanks since you couldn't see the front wheel until it was almost too late).
Anyways, pulled that trailer with 12 alfalfa bales about 20 miles across a county, twice. The entire trailer tipped the scales at roughly 17,000 lbs and we hauled it over country gravel roads that consisted of a lot of hills. No trailer brakes, so the trailer liked to "push" the pickup down the hills. Needless to say, we overloaded the trailer and probably the pickup, but we made it home...

I once helped a UPS truck out of a ditch with my Wrangler.
